Rope Access Logbook: A Digital Replacement for Paper Logbooks

Rope Access Logbook is the iOS app we built to replace the paper logbooks rope access technicians have carried for decades, preserving the certification rigour while removing the friction.

The Problem

Rope access is a regulated profession. Every working hour, every task, every supervisor sign-off has to be logged correctly or the technician cannot progress through certification levels. The industry has historically run this on paper:

• Notebooks get water-damaged, lost, or destroyed on site.
• Supervisors are not always available to sign when the work happens.
• Auditors expect clean, legible records, which paper logs rarely deliver.
• Sharing or backing up records means scanning by hand, page by page.

What We Built

A native iOS app organised around the actual rope-access workflow:

• Effortless logging. Record hours, jobs, and tasks in a structured form built for the certification body, not a generic timesheet.
• Supervisor sign-off. Supervisors sign each entry inside the app, so verification happens in real time, not weeks later.
• Mobile access. The logbook lives on the phone or tablet the technician already carries to site.
• PDF export. A single tap produces a clean, formatted PDF of the full logbook for sharing, submission, or printing.
• Secure and reliable. Entries are stored offline-first and synced to encrypted backups so a lost or damaged device never costs a technician their hard-earned hours.

How It Works

The iOS client is built in Swift and SwiftUI with Core Data for offline-first storage. PDF generation runs through PDFKit, producing print-ready output without a server round-trip. CloudKit handles secure backup and cross-device sync. A small Node.js service handles supervisor identity and sign-off integrity.
