Flashie is the native iOS flashcard app we built for students, language learners, and certification candidates who want a mobile-first alternative to Anki, with AI authoring, proper study modes, and full offline support.
The Problem
Most flashcard tools were built for desktop and bolted onto mobile years later. Adding cards is slow. Spaced repetition is buried in settings. PDFs and class notes cannot be imported directly, so learners spend more time creating cards than studying them. And the moment the user loses wifi on a commute, the study session ends.
What We Built
A native iOS app with three study modes and an AI authoring pipeline:
- Flashcards. Swipeable, beautifully typeset cards. Sort into Know and Still Learning, with real-time progress.
- Learn mode. An adaptive algorithm decides what to test you on, and exactly when, for maximum retention.
- Test mode. Multiple choice, written answers, and matching, to simulate a real exam.
The AI authoring engine turns pasted notes or imported PDFs into structured flashcard sets in seconds. It also explains difficult concepts on demand and auto-organises cards by subject.

How It Works
The iOS client is built in Swift and SwiftUI with Core Data powering offline storage and sync. The AI authoring engine runs on Python with FastAPI, combining OpenAI GPT-4 with custom prompts tuned for question-answer extraction across academic, medical, language, and technical domains.
