Seattle-local shops price against the local salary market, so identical scope tends to quote higher here than the national average. That premium is fine when it buys you something the location actually provides (more on that below). It's not fine as a default.
One warning that outranks any price chart: a quote is only as good as the scope behind it. A feature list has no finish line, so a feature-list quote always grows. Insist on scoping to a workflow ("a store associate checks inventory and places a transfer order, offline included") and you'll know every week whether the build is on track.
From the field. The most common team we meet arrives with a demo that impressed everyone in a meeting and fell apart on real data. Local wins when the project needs shared rooms. Co-design workshops move faster with everyone at one whiteboard. If your app lives in a physical space (a store floor, a warehouse, a clinic), a team that can walk that floor during discovery will catch things a video call misses. And some stakeholder groups simply trust a team they've met in person.
Remote wins on talent pool and cost. A Seattle-only search limits you to whoever big tech hasn't hired this quarter; a remote search doesn't. You're also not funding Lake Union office rent through your invoice. And a good remote studio's habits (decisions in writing, weekly demos of working builds, repo access from day one) leave you an audit trail a handshake culture never does.
The test that matters isn't the zip code. It's whether the studio's process produces working software you can inspect weekly. A local shop that goes quiet for three weeks between meetings is worse than a remote one that demos every Friday, and the reverse is just as true.

Here's the opinion we hold hardest: if a studio won't give you the repository, walk away. Code ownership isn't a feature, it's the deal.
Full ownership means the Git repo, the signing certificates, the App Store and Play Console accounts, and the cloud infrastructure, all under your organization's control from week one, with IP assignment written into the contract. The difference shows up the day you and your vendor part ways. With ownership, you hand the repo to the next team and lose a week. Without it, you rewrite the app from scratch and lose two quarters.
Watch for the white-label variant of this problem. Some shops assemble your "custom" app on a licensed platform you can never take with you, and you find out at contract renewal, when the price goes up and your alternatives have quietly dropped to zero. One question on the first call surfaces it: "If we walk away after launch, what exactly do we have?" Every client of ours gets 100 percent code ownership, and we think that should be table stakes across the industry.
